Written by Ramchandra Pathare and published by Shabdalaya, Avghad Dukhnyanchi Prakarane is a collection of nine long stories portraying pressures within rural life, personal interests, institutional corruption, women’s experiences and social contradictions. A. N. Pendsekar’s critical review of the collection appeared in Aksharvedh.
Avghad Dukhnyanchi Prakarane is Ramchandra Pathare’s second collection of long stories. Published by Shabdalaya Prakashan, Shrirampur, in 1997, the volume contains nine stories. A critical review by A. N. Pendsekar appeared in Aksharvedh.
The nine stories are rooted in contemporary life. They present realistic accounts of self-interest and pressure within rural society, institutional corruption in government departments and contradictions surrounding women’s position in literary and social life.
In the story Tattvadnyan, a woman attempts to fulfil the wishes of an influential person to conceal her husband’s theft. The narrative explores personal interest, moral compromise and the influence exercised by individuals with social power. It also reflects inequality within rural society and the vulnerability of ordinary people.
Another story, Chaukula, uses the experiences of a store-department employee to examine corruption and injustice within an administrative system. After helping someone while handling a sale, the employee faces suspension. Institutional pressure, fabricated allegations and the difficulties faced by an honest individual become central to the story.
According to the review, the collection’s characters appear familiar because their emotions, mistakes, selfish interests and struggles reflect recognisable social realities. The reviewer also observes that an emotionally involved narrative approach occasionally reduces the critical distance within certain stories.
Pathare’s fiction draws attention to women’s experiences alongside wider rural and social issues. Power within relationships, exploitation, social expectations and structural inequality emerge as recurring themes throughout the collection.
