Published in the April 1998 issue of Navbharat, A. N. Pendsekar’s review examines Davedar, a collection of four long stories by Bhau Padhye published by Shabdalaya. The review highlights Padhye’s character-centred storytelling and realistic portrayal of human behaviour.
Bhau Padhye holds a distinctive position in modern Marathi literature. His book Davedar, a collection of four long stories, was published by Shabdalaya Prakashan, Shrirampur, in 1996. A critical review of the collection by A. N. Pendsekar appeared in the April 1998 issue of Navbharat.
According to the review, the stories included in the collection had originally appeared in periodicals between 1960 and 1982. Padhye’s Shreshtha Katha was published in 1995, but none of the stories collected in Davedar appeared in that earlier selection. The volume therefore introduces readers to a separate and noteworthy segment of his literary work.
The fictional world of Davedar is largely connected with lower-middle-class life. Rather than directly examining political or social problems, the stories focus on individual desires, selfishness, emotional conflict and complicated human relationships. Characters belonging to different social backgrounds reveal the contradictions and vulnerabilities present within everyday life.
The reviewer identifies readability as one of the principal strengths of Bhau Padhye’s fiction. His characters are created through close observation, direct experience and accounts gathered from others. This gives the narratives a convincing sense of reality and makes their characters vivid and memorable.
The accompanying writing also reflects Padhye’s interest in people from diverse fields, including singers, thinkers, scholars and writers. His observations demonstrate his knowledge, social awareness and ability to present complex personalities in an accessible style.
This archival clipping from Shabdalaya’s Press & Media collection records an important moment in the publishing history of Davedar. It also reflects Shabdalaya Publication House’s continuing commitment to preserving significant Marathi fiction, literary criticism and the work of influential contemporary authors.
