‘शब्दालयचं नवं वळण’ या वृत्तपत्रीय लेखामध्ये श्रीरामपूरच्या लेखिका आणि प्रकाशिका सुमती लांडे यांच्या साहित्यिक प्रवासातील एका महत्त्वपूर्ण टप्प्याची नोंद करण्यात आली आहे. पुस्तके वाचकांपर्यंत पोहोचवण्यासाठी त्यांनी ग्रामीण भागात राबवलेल्या पुस्तकविक्री मोहिमांनंतर शब्दालय प्रकाशनाने त्रैमासिक साहित्य नियतकालिक सुरू केले.

कात्रणातील माहितीनुसार, सुमती लांडे दूध वाहतुकीसाठी वापरल्या जाणाऱ्या रिकाम्या क्रेटमध्ये पुस्तके भरून गावोगावी पुस्तकविक्रीसाठी जात असत. ग्रामीण आणि निमशहरी भागांतील वाचकांपर्यंत मराठी पुस्तके प्रत्यक्ष पोहोचवण्याच्या या प्रयत्नाला रंगनाथ पठारे यांचे मार्गदर्शन मिळाले. या उपक्रमातून शब्दालयची स्वतंत्र प्रकाशन आणि पुस्तकप्रसार चळवळ विकसित झाली.

शब्दालयचा दिवाळी अंक वाचकांमध्ये परिचित होता. वार्षिक अंकापलीकडे साहित्यिक संवादासाठी अधिक नियमित माध्यमाची गरज जाणवल्यामुळे सुमती लांडे यांनी ‘शब्दालय’ त्रैमासिक सुरू केले. हा उपक्रम अचानक घेतलेला निर्णय नसून शब्दालयच्या सातत्यपूर्ण साहित्यिक वाढीचा पुढचा टप्पा असल्याचे लेखात नमूद केले आहे.

या त्रैमासिकाला केवळ प्रकाशन संस्थेचे ‘गृहपत्र’ न बनवता स्वतंत्र साहित्यिक व्यासपीठ म्हणून विकसित करण्याचा संकल्प होता. प्रत्येक अंकामध्ये महाराष्ट्रातील एका जिल्ह्याची साहित्यिक ओळख मांडली जाणार होती. संबंधित जिल्ह्यातील साहित्यप्रवाह, लेखक, सांस्कृतिक वैशिष्ट्ये आणि स्थानिक साहित्यपरंपरा वाचकांसमोर आणण्याची ही कल्पना मराठी नियतकालिक विश्वात वेगळी ठरणारी होती.

प्रत्येक अंकासाठी निवडलेल्या जिल्ह्यातील संपादकाला अतिथी संपादक म्हणून सहभागी करण्याची योजनाही होती. यामुळे स्थानिक साहित्यिक अनुभवाला प्रतिनिधित्व मिळणार होते. इंद्रजित भालेराव यांच्याकडे नियतकालिकाच्या संपादकपदाची जबाबदारी होती. पुणे-मुंबईकेंद्रित साहित्यविश्वाबाहेरून सुरू झालेल्या या उपक्रमाने प्रादेशिक साहित्यिक आवाजांना महत्त्वाचे व्यासपीठ उपलब्ध करून दिले.

शब्दालयच्या Press & Media संग्रहातील हे कात्रण सुमती लांडे यांच्या प्रकाशनविषयक दूरदृष्टीचा महत्त्वपूर्ण दस्तऐवज आहे. गावोगावी पुस्तके नेण्यापासून साहित्यिक त्रैमासिक सुरू करण्यापर्यंतचा हा प्रवास शब्दालयच्या वाचनसंस्कृती, पुस्तकप्रसार आणि नव्या लेखकांना व्यासपीठ देण्याच्या व्यापक बांधिलकीचे प्रतिनिधित्व करतो.

After developing an innovative rural book-distribution initiative, Shabdalay expanded its literary work by launching a quarterly Marathi magazine.

According to the clipping, Sumati Lande carried books in empty milk crates and travelled from village to village to make them available to readers. Guided by writer Ranganath Pathare, this grassroots initiative gradually developed into Shabdalay’s distinctive publishing and book-distribution movement.

Shabdalay was already known for its annual Diwali issue. Recognising the need for a more frequent medium of literary dialogue, Sumati Lande launched the Shabdalay quarterly. The article describes the magazine as a natural outcome of the publication house’s continuing growth rather than a sudden or isolated initiative.

The quarterly was not intended to function merely as an in-house publication. Its editorial vision was to devote every issue to the literary identity of one Maharashtra district. The magazine would introduce readers to that district’s writers, literary movements, cultural characteristics and regional traditions.

The plan also included appointing a guest editor from the selected district for each issue, ensuring meaningful local representation. Indrajit Bhalerao served as the magazine’s editor. Emerging beyond the traditionally dominant Pune–Mumbai publishing circuit, the initiative offered a platform to regional literary voices.
