About this book
The imaginative sensibility of Balkavi expresses extreme joy and exuberance with the same intensity with which it portrays profound sadness and despair. This critical study attempts to offer a coherent analysis of why and how his poetry, once celebrated for its songs of joy, gradually embarked on a journey towards melancholy.
Although the study primarily adopts an archetypal critical approach, it is not confined to this perspective alone. It draws upon various critical approaches wherever they can help unravel the essential poetic qualities of the works. Among these, the formalist approach has proved particularly valuable in revealing the aesthetic qualities and artistic characteristics of Balkavi’s poetry.
