About this book
Krishna is a writer of the soil—a pure, authentic writer in the truest sense. He possesses an extraordinarily sensitive eye for observation, and a tender, unclouded affection for nature and human relationships. The roots of his art and his writing run deep into the soil from which he comes.
In his two-act play Mhatara Paus (The Old Rain), Sulu and her husband, an ageing couple, unfold the story of their lives before us. At times, they laugh and play, teasing and gently pulling each other’s leg; at others, they immerse themselves in memories, trying to soften, even if just a little, the impact of their present reality. Today, their rain has become as understanding, pure, and wise as they are—as knowing as a grandfather. There is no doubt that this affectionate, tender rain will deeply move both audiences and readers.
In writing Thadga (The Grave), Krishna explores the emotional world of the young artist with great depth, while with equal sensitivity he reveals the inner worlds of the father and grandfather. The scope of this long one-act play is not limited merely to a single night in a field. Within the vast space he creates before us, he sets out on a much larger journey—a journey that touches the very core of human existence, and does so with extraordinary power.
May Krishna continue to create writing that is so organic, authentic, and deeply insightful.
