About this book
Feminism is an examination of all aspects of life from a woman's perspective. It is an awareness, a philosophy of life, and a theoretical approach. At the same time, it is also a call for collective and organised action.
Feminism, therefore, involves re-examining and restructuring all social institutions so that women and men can live with dignity as independent individuals.
Feminism can be practised at an individual level and incorporated into everyday life. Whatever field we work in, its presence can be felt as a philosophy that affirms our individual identity and existence. Thus, feminism is neither a rigid, dogmatic, nor a uniform philosophy confined to prescribed doctrines, nor should it be.
Although feminism encompasses several different schools of thought and ideological approaches, certain common principles transcend these differences and remain meaningful to everyone who identifies with feminism.
These principles include examining how femininity and masculinity are defined within particular social and historical contexts, and understanding the characteristics that society assigns to each. They also involve investigating in depth the socially constructed reasons behind differences in the behaviour of men and women.
Furthermore, feminism seeks to analyse the economic, historical, and political foundations of patriarchal structures and continuously strives to reduce women's subordinate status and bring an end to the oppression and subjugation of women.
