About this book
Dr. S. K. Patil delivers spiritual discourses, sermons, and conversations on spirituality in the Ahirani language across the Ahirani-speaking region. For generations, the chants of “Dnyanba-Tukaram,” “Ram Krishna Hari,” and “Jai Hari” have echoed through villages, hamlets, and rural settlements. Maharashtra’s culture is, in essence, the culture of the Warkari tradition. Bhajans, worship, kirtans, the chanting of God’s name, Harinam Saptah, pilgrimages and Dindi processions, Ekadashi observances, and the application of Ashtagandha are all symbols of Maharashtra’s cultural heritage and pathways to spiritual fulfilment. The principles of Warkari philosophy have also been practised during numerous religious and cultural festivals.
Keeping this tradition in mind, Dr. S. K. Patil has interpreted the abhangas of the revered saint Tukaram in Ahirani. Tukaram’s Abhang Gatha has already reached homes across Maharashtra, and among Marathi speakers today, Tukaram’s verses are perhaps the most deeply embedded in people’s hearts and on their lips. Through listening, recitation, reflection, bhajans, and kirtans, Tukaram has imparted lessons to generations. His verses also challenge people directly and reprimand them without hesitation. It is for this very reason that Dr. Patil has presented meaningful interpretations of Tukaram’s abhangas in Ahirani.
These interpretations of the abhangas in Ahirani inspire every reader to reflect deeply. One begins to feel that these forthright words in Ahirani are addressed directly to oneself. The work also becomes remarkably effective through its masterful use of a conversational style rooted in communication with ordinary people.
It begins to feel as though Tukaram himself is engaging in a dialogue through our own mother tongue. Spirituality thus becomes more accessible through devotion and easier to understand. Responding to Dr. S. K. Patil’s interpretations with a heartfelt “Jai Hari” becomes almost essential.
Tukaram, speaking through Ahirani, is preparing speakers of all languages to discover new meanings and deeper insights in his verses. This is a beautiful and valuable contribution in today’s times.
