According to the review, the reality depicted in the novel extends beyond the personal suffering of an individual character. Through crises affecting its characters, distrust within relationships, political pressure, economic interests and an insensitive social system, the novel constructs a wider portrait of its time.
The characters attempt to preserve their dignity, relationships and humanity within a corrupt and threatening environment.
