Ek Vaja Kshan, written by Vrunda Bhargave, is a Marathi short-story collection published by Shabdalaya Prakashan. Prakash Akolkar’s review of the book appeared on Sunday, 20 July 2008.
The review places the collection within the changing tradition of women’s writing. Although developments in science and technology have transformed the material conditions of life, questions involving values, morality, relationships and emotional well-being continue to affect individuals.
The stories portray self-respecting women negotiating domestic life, marriage, employment and emotional insecurity. Relationships between spouses, parents and children appear in different forms, revealing the tensions created by changing expectations and social circumstances.
Although many characters experience loneliness, they are not portrayed merely as victims. Disappointment, emotional conflict and failed relationships lead them towards a clearer understanding of identity, independence and personal dignity. The wisdom emerging from loneliness gives the collection its distinctive emotional character.
The narratives also examine emotional distance between men and women, suspicion, expectations, failed communication and self-respect. Bhargave sensitively presents the conflict between social conventions and personal choice.
According to Prakash Akolkar’s review, the collection does more than document women’s loneliness. It reveals new forms of self-awareness emerging from contemporary life and examines the emotional complexity of human relationships.
This clipping from Shabdalaya’s Press & Media archive is an important record of Marathi women’s writing and socially engaged fiction. It reflects Shabdalaya Publication House’s commitment to publishing sensitive stories, significant writers and thought-provoking Marathi literature.
