Written by Dr Keshav Sadre and published by Shabdalay, Kavitetil Adhunikatavada examines modernity, modernism and changing sensibilities in Marathi poetry. Reviewer Sharmapal Ratnakar evaluates the book’s theoretical approach, scholarly scope and limitations.
Kavitetil Adhunikatavada, written by Dr Keshav Sadre and published by Shabdalay Prakashan, Shrirampur, is a scholarly work of Marathi literary criticism. According to the handwritten archival notation, Sharmapal Ratnakar’s review appeared in the daily newspaper Sakal on 12 October 2009.
The book distinguishes between modernity and modernism—two connected but independent concepts. It explains that modernism is not simply a chronological departure from the past but an artistic perspective that gives inherited traditions new contexts, meanings and forms of expression.
Dr Sadre examines the poetry of five major Marathi poets: B. S. Mardhekar, P. S. Rege, Vinda Karandikar, Dilip Chitre and Arun Kolatkar. The study considers poetic imagery, linguistic experimentation, urban sensibility, cultural unease and changing experiences of modern life.
The book also outlines the historical background and major characteristics of literary modernism. It traces important developments in modern Marathi poetry beginning with Mardhekar and continuing through later experimental poets.
Reviewer Sharmapal Ratnakar acknowledges the scholarly strength of the book while also noting limitations in its scope. The review suggests that including additional significant poets could have made the study more comprehensive. The article therefore offers both appreciation and a balanced critical assessment.
Published by Shabdalay, Kavitetil Adhunikatavada is a valuable reference for readers, researchers, critics and students studying Marathi poetry, modern literary movements and literary theory. This clipping from Shabdalay’s Press & Media archive documents the publication house’s contribution to serious, research-oriented Marathi literary scholarship.
