‘वगसम्राज्ञी कांताबाई सातारकर’ या चरित्रग्रंथातून डॉ. संतोष खेडलेकर यांनी महाराष्ट्राच्या तमाशा परंपरेतील एका विलक्षण स्त्री कलाकाराचा जीवनप्रवास प्रभावीपणे उभा केला आहे. गुजरातमधील बडोदा येथे प्रतिकूल परिस्थितीत झालेला जन्म, मदिना ते कांता हा प्रवास, वैयक्तिक आयुष्यातील आघात आणि पुन्हा उभे राहून कुटुंबासह कलाकारांची पिढी घडवण्याची जिद्द—या सर्व पैलूंचे पुस्तकात संवेदनशील चित्रण आहे.

Dr Santosh Khedlekar’s Vagsamragni Kantabai Satarkar documents the remarkable life of one of Maharashtra’s most influential Tamasha artists. Beginning with Kantabai’s childhood in Baroda, the biography traces her transformation from Madina to Kanta, the hardships she endured and her determination to rebuild her life after profound personal losses.
Kantabai Satarkar helped establish Tamasha as an important form of Marathi folk theatre. Her efforts to secure performance spaces in Mumbai and Pune, promote Tamasha through newspaper advertisements and attract women audiences contributed significantly to the recognition of the art form.
The book presents both sides of her personality: the courageous leader who confronted adversity and the affectionate, family-oriented woman behind the performer. Despite facing repeated sorrow, Kantabai kept her pain behind the curtain and performed with unwavering energy for audiences who came to forget their own troubles.
Her artistic legacy was carried forward by her son, Padma Shri Raghuvir Khedkar, under whose leadership Tamasha performances reached Delhi and Chandigarh. During a felicitation event in New Delhi, writer Prashant Waghaye met Raghuvir Khedkar and Dr Santosh Khedlekar and received a copy of the biography. Reading it introduced him to Kantabai’s extraordinary journey and the wider challenges faced by Tamasha artists.
By featuring this book, Shabdalay celebrates not only Kantabai Satarkar’s inspiring life but also the importance of documenting Maharashtra’s folk art, Tamasha tradition and cultural history. It is truly a Proud Moment for Shabdalay.
