Rangnath Pathare | रंगनाथ पठारे

Born 20-07-1950 at a village Javale (Dist. Ahmednagar, Maharashtra) is one of the prominent contemporary Marathi writers. He had his schooling at Javale, Ahmednagar and Pune. He did his M.Sc.(1973) in Physics with first class honors. Mathematics and Statistics were other subjects he studied. Right from his childhood, he had interest in literature and culture. Consequently he tried his hand at writing. Writing for almost 50 years he; now has been rightfully positioned as a major voice in contemporary literature. He has 14 published novels and 6 collections of short stories to his credit. He has also contributed to literary and cultural criticism with 4 books. His works have been translated in to some Indian languages like Hindi, Kannada, Urdu, Sindhi and Konkani. He has also been translated in to English. He is a recipient of Sahitya Akademi award (1999) for his celebrated novel, “Tamrapat . He is a recipient of almost all important state level awards including 4 Government of Maharashtra state literary awards, where-after he has ceased to permit to send his books for consideration there.

Pathare has translated Manager Pandey’s all-important essay “Novel and Democracy” from Hindi in to Marathi. He has also translated works of Sartre, Marquez, Mikowaski from English in to Marathi. Pathare was a member of Maharashtra state board of Literature and Culture. He has headed a committee appointed by the Government of Maharashtra to propose a classical status to Marathi language. He was the member of the executive board of Sahitya Akademi and its convener for Marathi Language Advisory Board (2018-22) He has visited France as a member of delegation of Indian writers in 2001. In 2020 he was felicitated with Vinda Karandikar lifetime achievement award by the Government of Maharashtra. Just recently he has been felicitated with one more life time achievement award by U.S.A. based Maharashtra Foundation (Award ceremony to be held on 28 th of January 2023)

“Tamrapat (1994) and “Saatpatil” (2019) are his voluminous novels comprising of around 800 pages and both have been critically acclaimed. “ Namushkiche Swagat” (1999), “Bhar Choukatil Aranyarudan”(2008), “ Choshak Falodyan” ( 2014) are some more works that have gained him an important place in literature. Pathare treats himself as an Indian writer writing in Marathi.
