About this book
Dr. Satish Badave is widely recognized as a knowledgeable and eminent scholar of Marathi literature. He has undertaken an in-depth study of medieval Marathi literature and put forward several significant insights into the subject. In the present book, he goes a step further and attempts to explore the interregional connections of the Bhakti tradition. This endeavour is of immense significance.
At a time when the religious, cultural, and political systems surrounding society were becoming corrupt and increasingly fragile, poets responded to these circumstances by advocating a simple and accessible path of devotion, thereby contributing to the reconstruction of society. In Maharashtra, this process unfolded from the decline of Ramdevrao Yadava through the contributions of Namdev, Dnyaneshwar, and Eknath, and continued up to Tukaram, whose period also witnessed the rise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
What is particularly noteworthy is that a similar process was taking place at almost the same time across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, the northern regions of India, Bengal, and many other parts of the country.
In my view, the most significant achievement of this book is its discovery of these important connections across regional boundaries. The book makes us realize that India's cultural unity is not merely superficial; rather, it rests upon a deep and intrinsic foundation that binds its diverse regions together. This realization, I believe, is the book's greatest contribution.
