About this book
In the tradition of medieval Marathi poetry, the compositions of the Pandit poets emerged after the poetry of the saints. The works of these poets display considerable diversity. Their poetry exhibits several distinctive qualities, along with certain limitations: the creation of aesthetically rich poetry, the grandeur of Sanskrit, linguistic maturity and sophistication, refined literary expression, displays of erudition, the ability to engage the intellect rather than the heart, ornate embellishments and striking rhetorical effects, verbal acrobatics, the idealisation of Sanskrit, the extensive use of compound words, an emphasis on technical craftsmanship, and symbolic expression.
Since Moropant belonged to this scholarly Pandit poetic tradition, these characteristics are reflected throughout his extensive body of work. Nevertheless, Shlokekavali stands out as a powerful and passionate expression of his devotion. It is an introspective and deeply moving lyrical composition, imbued with pathos and beauty. Its most striking feature is Moropant’s heartfelt and anguished plea to God for his own spiritual redemption.
This deeply personal poetic work, expressing the devotion of a saintly soul devoted to the Divine, appeals to any discerning Marathi reader. It resembles a devotional discourse delivered by a Puranik—a traditional narrator of Puranic stories—and brings Moropant’s ideas and emotions vividly to life.
All the distinctive qualities of Moropant’s personality are clearly reflected in Shlokekavali. This is why the work occupies a unique place among his compositions. Written several centuries ago, this poetry continues to feel just as fresh and vibrant to poetry lovers today.
