About this book
The complex and challenging realities of rural life in the Varhad region unfold between two villages named Patilpura and Fukatpura. Within the framework of village society, balanced between the two pillars of practical dealings and traditional community customs, the sensitive, principled, self-respecting and rugged Shirpa struggles with a persistent sense of loneliness and alienation.
In his very first novel, G. P. Raibole vividly portrays the harsh realities of life in the drought-prone region of Vidarbha through Shirpa’s experiences. Having voluntarily left his native village, Shirpa considers Timbari his entire world. He works tirelessly for the village and becomes a beloved figure among its people. Yet, despite his dedication and contribution, the villagers continue to identify him merely as an outsider—as a Phating.
Raibole successfully takes on the challenge of creating numerous characters, each with an independent identity and distinct presence. The novel captures the many nuances of rural Vidarbha and the distinctive features of the Varhadi dialect, offering readers the authentic experience of regional rural literature.
The ease and naturalness with which the author brings the rural landscape of Vidarbha alive make it difficult to believe that this is his debut novel. Phating is a noteworthy contribution to Marathi literature and a novel that deserves recognition.
