चिं. त्र्यं. खानोलकर
C. T. Khanolkar (1930–1976), Chintamani Tryambak Khanolkar, was a Marathi poet, playwright and writer of fiction, who published his poetry as Arati Prabhu and his plays and fiction under his own name. Born on 8 March 1930 at Baglanchi Rai near Vengurla in the Konkan, into a family of small means that ran a khanaval, he was educated to matriculation. His poetry, as Arati Prabhu, first appeared in Satyakatha in 1954, and his first collection, Jogva, in 1959.
When the khanaval failed in 1959 he moved to Mumbai and held a short-lived post at Akashvani, living afterwards in poverty. The collections Divelagan (1962), Nakshatranche Dene (1975) and the posthumous Pashan Palavi (1976) carried his poetry from agitation and distress towards a conversational grace, and poems such as “Ye Re Ghana” and “Tu Tenvha Tashi” were later set to music. Shabdalaya Prakashan published his Wara Waje Runajhuna.
Between 1966 and 1976 he wrote six plays that unsettled the realistic and melodramatic habits of Marathi theatre: Ek Shunya Bajirao (1966), a play within a play, Avadhya (1971) and Ajab Nyaya Vartulacha (1973), his adaptation of Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1976 and died in Mumbai on 26 April 1976. Nakshatranche Dene received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978.
