ऑगस्ट १९८४ मध्ये प्रसिद्ध झालेल्या ‘उगवती’ या सदरात कवयित्री सुमती लांडे यांचा संक्षिप्त परिचय आणि पाच कविता प्रकाशित करण्यात आल्या होत्या. हे कात्रण त्यांच्या प्रारंभिक साहित्यिक वाटचालीची नोंद जपणारा महत्त्वपूर्ण ऐतिहासिक दस्तऐवज आहे.
कात्रणातील परिचयानुसार, त्या काळात सुमती लांडे यांचा स्वतंत्र कवितासंग्रह प्रसिद्ध झाला नव्हता; मात्र त्यांच्या कविता विविध माध्यमांतून रसिकांपर्यंत पोहोचत होत्या. मराठी विषयातून एम.ए.चे शिक्षण, अध्यापनाचे कार्य आणि श्रीरामपूर येथे पुस्तकांचे दुकान चालवण्याशी असलेला संबंध यांचा परिचयात उल्लेख आढळतो. शिक्षण, कविता आणि पुस्तकविश्व यांच्याशी त्यांचे नाते सुरुवातीपासूनच दृढ असल्याचे या नोंदीतून दिसते.
‘भिंतीतूनही’ या कवितेत मानवी नात्यांतील जवळीक, अंतर आणि भावनिक संवाद व्यक्त होतो. ‘वळणावर’ ही कविता जीवनातील अनपेक्षित भेटी आणि आठवणींचा वेध घेते. ‘चंद्र’मध्ये निसर्गप्रतिमा आणि भावविश्व यांचा सुंदर मेळ दिसतो. ‘नको विचारू’ या कवितेत नात्यातील प्रश्न, अस्वस्थता आणि अंतर्मुखता आहेत; तर ‘एक झाड असं!’ या कवितेत झाडाच्या प्रतिमेतून जीवन, सावली, बदल आणि आशयपूर्ण अस्तित्वाची अनुभूती येते.
