About this book
Sahitya Ani Astitvabhan (Literature and Existential Awareness)
This book brings together three kinds of writing. The first comprises literary criticism of poetry. The second includes translated poems accompanied by insightful commentary, particularly in the sections Saat Chedh Adhunik Kavitele (Seven Intersections with Modern Poetry) and Kavi Kay Kaam Karto (What Does a Poet Do?). The third consists of reflections on the sensibilities and temperaments of certain contemporary writers, as well as on literary culture.
While reading these writings in their collected form, one cannot help feeling that they should have been published as a book 25 to 30 years ago. They should have reached researchers and scholars and found a place in university curricula and reference bibliographies. Had that happened, readers would have encountered new perspectives on understanding poetry and literature as a whole much earlier. It might also have helped cultivate a readership with refined tastes, open to unconventional literary approaches. Such readers could have brought greater diversity to creative pursuits and drawn inspiration from the literary, non-moralistic, and culturally sensitive perspectives expressed in these essays.
This does not mean that the significance of these writings has diminished today. On the contrary, their importance has grown even further, particularly as transparency in literary practices and institutions appears to be gradually declining. The writings of Chitra offer thoughtful and guiding insights into how we might respond to this situation.
