About this book
The Psychiatrist to the Sane
The social perception that people suffering from mental health disorders are “mad” and that psychiatrists who treat them are “doctors for the mad” continues to persist even today. In reality, just as the body can suffer from illnesses, the mind can also become unwell, and it has been sufficiently established that mental health conditions can be treated successfully with appropriate care.
Dr. Anand Nadkarni, a renowned psychiatrist, works with the belief that people who experience mental health problems are, at their core, perfectly “sane” individuals. His mission is to raise public awareness about mental health, treat people experiencing mental health conditions and help them rebuild their lives, and equip people to cope with the stresses of today’s fast-paced world. In this sense, he truly is “The Psychiatrist to the Sane.”
He has developed a distinctive model for mental healthcare through the Institute for Psychological Health (IPH). Alongside conventional approaches such as clinical treatment and counselling, the model creatively incorporates enjoyable and engaging methods involving literature, music, theatre, visual arts, and dialogue.
This book tells the story of an innovative experiment in mental healthcare that has continued tirelessly for the past twenty years.
