This is the concluding section of A. N. Pendsekar’s review of Ramchandra Pathare’s Avghad Dukhnyanchi Prakarane, published by Shabdalaya. The review examines the collection’s portrayal of corrupt institutions, caste inequality, rural power structures, women’s experiences and psychological conflict.
Ramchandra Pathare’s Avghad Dukhnyanchi Prakarane is a collection of nine long stories published by Shabdalaya Prakashan, Shrirampur, in 1997. The concluding section of A. N. Pendsekar’s detailed review appeared on page 49 of the April 1998 issue of Navbharat.
The collection examines conflicts between individuals and unequal social institutions. Corrupt officials, opportunistic political and social figures, the exploitation of poor and Dalit communities and attitudes of caste superiority emerge prominently throughout the stories.
One narrative portrays individuals who exploit religious and social beliefs for personal benefit. It demonstrates how powerful people manipulate vulnerable members of rural society. Even when an ordinary person recognises the injustice of the system, the individual may lack the power to resist it.
Other stories depict government institutions weakened by corruption. A person who challenges dishonest officials faces psychological and social pressure. The author closely observes the resulting frustration, emotional strain and transformation within the individual mind.
Stories such as Ek Gaav Ek Maranvata examine rural politics, conflict between social groups and tensions created by personal ambition. Davanila Gaay explores duplicity within relationships and the emotional pain experienced by a woman caught within those circumstances.
Other narratives consider love, expectation, women’s self-awareness and instability within relationships. They portray how emotional shocks can alter a person’s understanding of identity, trust and personal dignity.
Reviewer A. N. Pendsekar identifies distinctive characters, carefully selected incidents, character-appropriate dialogue and effective language as important strengths of Pathare’s writing. The stories transcend particular individuals or groups to present a broader picture of social reality.
