About this book
A Marathi translation of the Tamil novel Yeruveyil.
Selvan’s life was no longer the same as before. Under a housing development scheme, his family was forced to sell their ancestral land. The vivid image of the lush green landscape, deeply imprinted in his mind since childhood, gradually faded and disappeared. Selvan and his family had to move into a much smaller space.
In the years that followed, the various hardships that befell his family began to create a tense atmosphere at home. Selvan gradually realised that greed and jealousy, two destructive human tendencies, had overshadowed their lives and turned the course of their fortunes for the worse.
Perumal Murugan’s debut novel, Yeruveyil, was published in 1991, marking the beginning of his illustrious, though somewhat turbulent, literary career. His writing is distinguished by its penetrating portrayal of the complexities and tensions of human relationships, as well as the originality of its themes.
This Marathi translation of his novel will make readers acutely aware of the deterioration of human life and the erosion of values brought about by the relentless urbanisation taking place all around us.
