लोकभाषांचे संवर्धन ही काळाची गरज—डॉ. राजन गवस Preservation of Folk Languages Is the Need of the Hour—Dr Rajan Gavas

Folk languages preserve the lived experiences, culture and collective memory of communities outside the boundaries of standardised language. In this Lokmat article, Dr Rajan Gavas argues that folk languages need active use, writing and preservation alongside their academic study.

In the article titled Preserving Folk Languages Is More Important Than Merely Studying Them Through Linguistics, Dr Rajan Gavas raises an important question about the survival and preservation of people’s languages. The article was published in the Marathi newspaper Lokmat on 25 April 2009.

While standard languages and formal linguistic studies have their place, the article argues that languages used in the everyday lives of communities must not be neglected. Folk languages preserve regional experiences, relationships, traditions, occupations, beliefs, humour and collective social memory.

The true vitality of a language lies in its everyday use. If folk languages remain only subjects of academic research, their natural existence may gradually weaken. They must continue to be spoken, written and passed to future generations through literature. Protecting regional vocabulary and distinctive modes of expression enriches linguistic diversity.

The article’s language itself demonstrates the expressive power of a folk dialect. This creates a meaningful connection between its subject and style. It underlines that a folk language is not an incomplete or inferior form of communication but an independent and powerful expression of cultural identity.

Preserved in Shabdalay’s Press & Media archive, this clipping connects with the broader literary objective of documenting Marathi dialects, folk literature and linguistic heritage. It is a valuable archival record for readers interested in language, literature, cultural identity and the preservation of India’s diverse linguistic traditions.
