Shabdalaya Prakashan founder Sumati Lande draws on her experience in bookselling, literary outreach and Diwali-issue publishing to encourage a new generation to enter the publishing industry with modern technology. The article also documents Shabdalaya’s formative years in Shrirampur.
In this article, Sumati Lande recalls the early years of Shabdalaya’s bookselling and literary work in Shrirampur. Because the original bookshop was located outside the main town area, attracting regular customers was difficult. An additional bookselling point was therefore established near Shrirampur railway station.
When this initiative received a limited response, Lande began taking books directly to schools in surrounding areas. The positive response from educational institutions gave the young book business valuable stability.
A literary conference organised at Ashoknagar introduced her to representatives of the Granthali readers’ movement. This association led to the establishment of a Granthali centre in Shrirampur and connected Shabdalaya’s commercial activity with a wider reading movement.
Frequent visits to Pune and Mumbai for purchasing books exposed Lande to a wide range of Marathi Diwali issues. This experience inspired her to consider publishing an independent annual issue based on a strong literary theme.
Despite having no previous experience in producing a Diwali issue, she discussed the idea with literary and artistic collaborators. With assistance from Dr. R. V. Mancharkar and artist Shridhar Ambhore, the first Shabdalaya Diwali issue was published in 1985.
The inaugural issue received a strong response and won three awards. The Shabdalaya Diwali issue was subsequently published without interruption until 2008, with each edition developed around a carefully selected theme.
The article records the challenges of Marathi bookselling, distribution, school outreach, reader movements and literary publishing. Its central message is that younger professionals should use new technology to carry the publishing industry forward.
