About this book
Chhattisgarh was the principal field of work of Shankar Guha Niyogi. Born into a Bengali lower-middle-class bhadralok family in Assam, this young man came to the region in search of employment. What is remarkable is how deeply he connected himself with the joys and sorrows, culture, and identity of its people, eventually becoming one of them. Such rare and exceptional examples reflect the true spirit of Indian identity and the invisible yet powerful bonds that unite us.
Niyogi’s work is an exceptionally significant example of what an individual can achieve by mobilising the inner strength of a determined will, supported by a strong philosophical foundation, an unwavering commitment to the suffering of ordinary people, integrity, and an impeccable personal character. He demonstrated how neglected, oppressed, and unorganised people could be brought together to build a powerful collective movement. His work will continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for activists across the country seeking alternative paths in the struggle for a dignified life for ordinary people.
This book not only reviews Niyogi’s life and work but, more importantly, examines how much of his legacy and movement survives in Chhattisgarh after his death. This study and its presentation will undoubtedly prove valuable to activists, researchers, and scholars interested in social movements and people-centred struggles.
